In addressing the explanation of the US financial crisis and its expansion throughout the world, most analysts and academics have focused on financial practices, the lack of regulation, and the abuses of individuals and institutions, but they’ve overlooked the work aspect as a relevant explanation. Some of the vulnerabilities of the economies that the crises have made evident have to do mainly with long-term factors, precisely related to the working conditions in the world inherited by the flexibilization policies of the Washington consensus. The article first addresses the genesis of the crisis from its labor perspective, then presents two particular cases -the United States and Latin America- with special emphasis in Colombia, and finally some results are presented regarding a new vision of work and possible guidelines from labor policy to face the crises.
