From the cultivation field to the battlefield: saltpetre production and German and English companies during the First World War. Taltal, 1910-1920

This article analyzes the impact of the First World War on one of the ports of the Chilean saltpetre region. In the context of a capitalist and integrated world market, the European powers and the attempts to secure their supply routes and prevent their adversaries from reaching them, this confrontation had a negative impact on the economy of the region.
This confrontation had a negative impact on the economy of the saltpeter region given the high need for nitrate supplies during the conflict and the questioned Chilean neutrality. Finally, the socioeconomic repercussions of the conflict in the southern sector of the Atacama Desert are analyzed, closing with some conclusions that aim to shed light on this problem.
