The limits of extractivism in the Chilean economy

Extractivism has been a structural feature of the Chilean economy throughout its history, spanning various development models. From colonial times to the present, the exploitation of natural resources for export has been fundamental to the country's economic growth. However, this model has generated a number of problems, such as dependence on natural resource rents, vulnerability to external shocks, and environmental and social unsustainability. This article analyzes the limits of extractivism in Chile, its negative impacts, and the need for a shift towards a post-extractivist development model that prioritizes economic diversification, social justice, and environmental sustainability.
