The role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in enhancing operational efficiency among Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) has garnered significant attention in recent years. This study employs a scientometric approach to analyze global research trends on ICT and SMEs, covering publications from 1975 to 2023. Unlike prior studies that often focus on case-based analysis or regional perspectives, this research offers a comprehensive and global overview, identifying the most influential articles, authors, and countries contributing to this field.
Key findings reveal a significant shift in ICT’s role -from operational tools to strategic enablers of innovation and sustainability- highlighting the intersection of digital transformation and circular economy practices. By mapping emerging trends and research gaps, this study provides actionable insights for academics and policymakers seeking to optimize ICT adoption within resource-constrained SMEs.
