Abstract

This essay covers Milton Friedman´s two visits to Chile in March 1975 and November 1981 arguing that his influence has been overestimated or even exaggerated. After analyzing his first visit and the importance of his rather unknown public lecture “The Fragility of Freedom”, some reactions are underlined. His second visit was different.
Some remarks he made to the press and an unpublished correspondence with José Rodríguez Elizondo suggest that his well-known understanding of the relationship between economic freedom and political freedom might have changed. Indeed, contrary to what is normally assumed, Friedman could have been influenced by Chile
and not the opposite. If his visits have been tainted by his meeting with Pinochet, the historical evidence allows us to elaborate a different view of his Chilean experience.
