Abstract

Objective: to evaluate the evolution of COVID-19 as a function of race/skin color and factors associated with death from COVID-19 among Brazilian puerperal women reported in the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System. Method: population-based cross-sectional study, including postpartum women with confirmation of COVID-19, in two different periods: from March 22 to August 8, 2020 and from August 9, 2020 to January 2, 2021, the factors investigated were: sociodemographic variables; contamination variables and severity of the disease; clinical signs and symptoms. Descriptive analysis was performed on variables related to sociodemographic and clinical signs and symptoms, bivariate analysis using the chi-square test between the covariates of interest and the outcome, calculating the odds ratio value and the 95% confidence interval. Results: The present study identified a 44.6% decrease in puerperal deaths in the two periods studied. Among the associated factors, the findings confirm the respiratory symptoms: dyspnea, respiratory distress and oxygen saturation below 95%, as well as the evolution for the use of ventilation and the need for ICU. Conclusions: considering both periods, the factors associated with death were related to respiratory signs and symptoms: dyspnea, respiratory distress and oxygen saturation below 95%, with an association with the need for mechanical ventilation and ICU.
