Abstract

Thinking about the pop category as an aesthetic phenomenon allows a deeper understanding of the pop culture forms: superficiality, simulation, direct style, and massing. Recent Chilean theater plays such as, ‘Mateluna’ by Guillermo Calderón and ‘La dictadura de lo cool’ by the ‘La Re-sentida’ company, use some resources from the pop culture as a way to ironize the political. In these works the materialities, both visual and sound, offer the possibility of rethinking recent historical and social phenomena in Chile. Thus, the aim of this work is to problematize the political from a perceptual turn and introduce the pop category in the analysis of two theater plays, where the focus is not on the narrative or conceptual matrix, but rather on the aesthetic procedures used in each work for exhibiting the political on stage.
