Abstract

Ernesto de la Cárcova was an agent of great relevance for the institutionalization and consolidation of art education in Buenos Aires during the beginning of the twentieth century. The purpose of this paper is to analyze Cárcova'sinitiatives to purchase plaster casts, to characterize the formation of collections according to their institutional destination and to examine their effectiveness in relation to their use in art education. Two stages are identified, a first one in which the endowment of models for the teaching of drawing was privileged and another one for the conformation of a museum of comparative sculpture for the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes. The research is oriented to reflect on the place of plaster sculptural casts in the artistic education of the period.
