Abstract

The history of ports in Chile dates to the Spanish colonization. In fact, since roads were of very poor quality or simply did not exist, maritime routes and, therefore, ports, or rather beaches, played a central role not only in the country’s foreign trade but also
in the mobility of people and cargo within the national territory. In this context, the port of Valparaíso has been a fundamental engine in the economic development of the region and the country since its first use by the Spanish colonizers. This article examines the evolution of port activity in Valparaíso, as well as its impact on the city from the 1970s to the present day. During this period, the port has faced significant challenges and has undergone substantial transformations that have allowed it to accommodate much of the growth in foreign trade transferred in central Chile.
By its 500th anniversary in 2026, the Port of Valparaíso should be well advanced towards a new stage of expansion with full citizen support and with a combination of services to foreign trade, tourism and its inhabitants that will continue to ensure that it remains, as the song says, the Principal Port.
