This manuscript explores how the objects—more than a thousand shoes found on the beaches of the central coast—that comprise the installation 1344… were able to be constituted as art objects. Based on this inquiry, the article reflects on the artistic, ecological, and political implications of understanding this process of transformation, illuminating the complex relationship we humans establish with the things we produce and consume based on the notion of abjection proposed by Julia Kristeva as a complement to the notion of hyperobject, proposed by Timothy Morton.
