Abstract

This project addresses the valorization of the historical and architectural heritage of the Tarapacá nitrate mines, particularly the Victoria Nitrate Mine, the last great vestige of the industry that was the economic engine of Chile. These unique settlements, which housed the Pampas community, now lie as forgotten ruins in the Atacama Desert.

The proposal is the design of a Memorial Museum of the Tarapacá Nitrate Mines, conceived as the starting point for an extensive interpretive tour of the Victoria Nitrate Mine. This space seeks to raise awareness, disseminate, and promote the memory of a unique way of life, inviting new generations to explore the history and legacy of these remains. The architectural program includes a main building with exhibitions, an auditorium, and services, complemented by an extensive elevated walkway with viewing points overlooking the site’s key landmarks. The design incorporates construction principles inspired by nitrate architecture and contemporary references, using materials such as steel, concrete, and Oregon pine wood. The project’s structure, with its walkway as its main axis and vertical towers, seeks to engage with the horizontality of the desert, creating a space for contemplation that preserves and shares the cultural and historical richness of the nitrate pampas.
