Eugenio Téllez in Casaplan (Valparaíso)

Abstract

Account of the meeting between the Chilean artist living in Paris, Eugenio Téllez, and a group of artists and cultural managers from Valparaíso, at CasaPlan, on June 10, 2025. The significance of welcoming the presence of a master who was assistant and co-associate director of Atelier 17 between 1960 and 1965 to this important printmaking center. His proximity to Stanley W. Hayter was a decisive factor in the development of his career, as he was the architect of his move to Chicago, Montreal, and Toronto. In this city, Eugenio Téllez pursued an academic career, during which he moved to Paris numerous times between 1974 and 1988, where he settled permanently in the late 2000s. In this interview, Eugenio Téllez addresses a little-known event in the history of the Salvador Allende Museum of Solidarity, as well as the nature of his emotional and working relationship with Hayter. He also recounts his first trip to Chile in 1979, after a twenty-year absence, for the purpose of carrying out a clandestine mission, using his status as an artist as a cover. In 1981, he returned to conduct, among other activities, an important workshop on graphic arts and mixed media at the Taller de Artes Visuales. He also collaborated on art actions for the Art Action Collective.
