Three chapels and a bastion of solitude

Abstract

This text proposes a reflection on architecture as a threshold for introspection, positioning solitude as a necessary condition for conscious inhabitation. In the context of a present marked by immediacy and a constant flow of stimuli, stillness is proposed as a way of approaching a deeper dimension of spatial experience, where feeling, memory, and imagination intertwine in the perception of the landscape.

The body becomes the measure of space and time, functioning as a sensitive instrument that, through movement, reveals and interprets the environment. It is through walking, transition, distance, waiting, and contemplation that the landscape ceases to be distant and is transformed into experience.

From this perspective, a coastal route is proposed along the edge of Valparaíso, where architecture takes form in a series of chapels of solitude and a final bastion. These elements are inserted as pauses within the continuous flow of the city, creating spaces where the body can stop, perceive, and inhabit the threshold between seeing and feeling. Rather than offering definitive answers, the proposal opens a space for contemplation, where solitude becomes a moment of introspection within the city, generating public spaces for reflection and seeking to construct a collective and warm solitude—one that ultimately gives solitude a place in the world.
