Emergencies in the literary field and their impact on anthological practice in Valparaíso as a form of heritage rescue

Abstract

This work proposes, on the basis of the notions developed by Pierre Bourdieu in his book Les règles de l'art, the way in which general conditions of development of the literary field determine anthological practice. The research concentrates on the case of Valparaíso, Chile, considering the extensive literary history of the city from the nineteenth century. To achieve this, it is proposed the notion of a tension that is complementary to the one occurring between the cultural field and the field of power: the tension among a local cultural field and a metropolitan cultural field. A historical revision will show three cycles of emergence of a cultural field, underlining the determination of social and economic factors on creation, editorial practices, associativity and, at last, anthological practice. This last factor must be considered as an important local element of intangible cultural heritage.
