This manuscript discusses the limitations imposed by the 1964 Venice Charter on the restoration processes of historic buildings or those of heritage value, taking as a starting point a pivotal restoration case of the 21st century: Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. The article reviews the restorations carried out on the cathedral, other reconstruction cases such as the Campanile in St. Mark’s Square in Venice, the theories of Viollet-le-Duc, the principles set forth in the Venice Charter, and the final decision made by the French state regarding the restoration of Notre-Dame.
