Abstract

Perceiving electronic media through digital screens can be observed as a complex system where not only materials and technologies interact, but also as a place where social, cultural, ideological, political, and economic interactions manifest. The interfaces of media reflect a series of decisions than can be seized if we situate at different scales (micro, meso, macro). In this article, we study digital culture and cultural interfaces from a semiotic perspective. We first develop a model of analysis to examine the complexity underlying different meaning levels and their imbrications. Second, we put in practice our model to sketch an analytical map that helps locating different substance manifests at the heart of practices and strategies of digital culture.
