Abstract

This article presents a general overview at a global level of the cultural importance of plant species used as fiber sources for making textiles. The Moraceae family includes many of the lesser-known species for making textiles. The development of new genetic tools has allowed the study of cultural objects made of materials from living organisms including textiles, opening windows to investigate the past. This article summarizes the results of a decade-long research of Pacific paper mulberry. Our interdisciplinary work has focused on the genetic analysis of the paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera) plants and textiles, to answer questions related to the peopling of island Oceania.
