The Black Virgin and feminine sacredness: Appreciations from alchemy and contemporary art

From a contemporary artistic perspective, this article seeks to take a step further in the study of the carvings of medieval origin classified as black virgins, whose validity is evident in light of the cultural interest that the phenomenon still arouses today in environments that transcend classical Christian devotion. Without losing the link with the tradition of the Gospel, certain currents of alchemical hermeticism found a natural link with artistic practice at the end of the 19th century and during the avant-garde of the 20th century. The case of the Parisian painter Louis Cattiaux is particularly interesting and represents an important exponent who has updated the approach to the mystery of the black virgin, which acquires new and profound dimensions for the contemporary gaze.
