Editorial Policy

Aims and Scope

Sur y Tiempo is a journal dedicated to history in any of its areas and to all research involving a historical-temporal perspective. Therefore, it is open to interdisciplinary dialogue and contributions from social sciences. Although it offers space to all periods and geographical regions, it favors those articles focused on Latin American issues and aims to disseminate knowledge of the historical heritage of Valparaíso. Manuscripts may be submitted by authors from anywhere in the world, although priority will be given to those working or living in Latin America. The journal is addressed to the national and international scientific community and to all interested members of the public.

Peer Review Process

Authors will submit their articles through the journal's platform. The articles received will be preliminarily evaluated by the editorial committee to determine if the manuscripts meet the formal requirements and if they fit the themes of the journal. Once this process is completed, the document will be anonymously sent to two external arbitrators (preferably experts with doctoral or master's degrees, belonging to national or foreign universities or research centers.) Their evaluations will be also sent anonymously to the authors (double-blind system.)

The evaluators will decide on the article among four options: accepted; accepted with minor corrections; accepted with major corrections; and rejected. If the article is rejected in one of the evaluations, a third evaluation will be made. The committee will send the evaluations of the accepted articles to the authors, who will have between one and four weeks (depending on the extent of the requested corrections, if appliable) to send the modified article. Once the article is received, the editorial committee will decide on its final acceptance or will ask the reviewers for a final revision. The process will take between one and four months.

Open Access Policy

This journal has provided, since its first issue, open and immediate access to its contents, based on the principle that offering the public free access to research helps to create a democratic, equitable and universal exchange of global knowledge. Readers have access to all issues completely free of charge, with no embargo period and no need for users to register. Sur y Tiempo is also, since its first issue, free of charge for its authors throughout the editing process (it does not charge any kind of fees for mailing, layout, publication, etc.) Likewise, it adheres to the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI.) In line with the above, it publishes its materials under the Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0) license. In Sur y Tiempo, the copyright holder grants rights of use to third parties through an open license, allowing free and immediate access to the materials, authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print or use for any purpose that does not imply the modification of the content.

  2. Adopting words or ideas from other authors without due acknowledgment.
  3. Not using quotation marks in a literal quotation.
  4. Giving incorrect information about the true source of a quotation.
  5. Paraphrasing a source without mentioning the source.
  6. Abusive paraphrasing, even if the source is mentioned.

Practices constituting scientific fraud are as follows:

  1. Fabrication, falsification or omission of data and plagiarism.
  2. Duplicate publication.
  3. Authorship conflicts.

Sur y Tiempo uses the Turnitin tool for plagiarism detection.

Handling of Claims, Complaints, and Appeals

Authors, reviewers and readers can submit one of these resources by e-mail to revista.surytiempo@uv.cl. The editorial committee will acknowledge receipt and analyze the message, deciding whether to reject or accept the appeal, or to request more information. In the case of acceptance, an investigation will be initiated and a report will be prepared. Based on this report, the editorial committee will make a decision, notify the sender of the message and enforce the decision. The entire process shall not exceed four weeks from the receipt of the message. In the event that an ethical violation is detected, the procedure specified in the previous section shall apply.
