Alive in war, dying in peace: Manganese mining in Chile and the strategic inscription of the norte chico in the orb of conflicts (1884-1953)

It is characterized the development of Chilean manganese mining in general, seeing the case of Norte Chico in particular, considering the derivations and the regional impact of the global market demand that was modeled by the demands of the war, a situation that represented a milestone of opportunity for development for strategic mining, but which was also characterized by its weak condition, zigzagging productivity and precarious modes of production. In this way, the war context stimulated a process of intensive exploitation, where the State had an important participation through the Corporación de Fomento de la Producción (CORFO) and the Caja de Crédito y Fomento Minero (CACREMI), thus seeking, support and promote a medium-sized mining that conveyed the global inscription of the Norte Chico in a scene of conflict.
