The goal of this article is to show the timeliness of Hegel’s critic of irrationalism. The interpretative hypothesis to be demonstrated is that the modern concept of irrational, whose origin is found in mathematical language, is causally related to the problem of infinity. To better develop this issue, I intend to show Hegel’s dialogue with Schelling, whose diagnosis of the problem of opposition between finite and infinite in philosophical systems until his time greatly influenced the very conception of philosophy and reason of the young Hegel.
