LEGITIMATION SPEECHES ON CHILDREN’S EXPOSURE TO SCREENS

Abstract

In recent decades, the stock of digital platforms and applications aimed at young children has increased and, with it, the time they are exposed to screens. The debate about potentialities and consequences of this situation for their future development is extensive. The article analyzes the speeches mothers and fathers use to legitimize exposure practices. Based on content and argument analysis of the emerging conversations in nine discussion groups carried out in Uruguay during the year 2021, modes of legitimation are typologised. Four types are identified: (1) situational legitimation; (2) social legitimation; (3) educational legitimation; and (4) functional legitimation.
