MIDWIFERY CARE FOR THE MANAGEMENT AND PREVENTION OF COMPLICATIONS IN PERIPHERAL ARTERIAL ACCESS

Abstract

The analysis was through the review of a clinical history, which describes an extremely premature newborn, who was born by emergency cesarean section due to placental abruption and fetal bradycardia, resulting in a male neonate receiving advanced resuscitation maneuvers.  Due to his extreme prematurity, he presented complications requiring strict and periodic monitoring of all his systems.

The premature infant presented vasospasm in the lower extremity as a complication of peripheral arterial access, then ischemia and subsequent necrosis, losing all of the toes of the extremity.

As evidenced by the literature, peripheral arterial accesses are useful in critically ill patients who require serial examination samples.  This is a safe procedure, which requires the necessary experience and knowledge to perform it, requiring knowing what measures to take promptly to avoid complications and permanent consequences.

The lack of surveillance could be the main reason for this permanent sequel, which demonstrates the importance of continuous training of staff and preparation of professionals, constant supervision of procedures, maintaining systematically updated protocols and incorporation of new technologies, as well as also maintain humanized care and an empathetic relationship with parents.
