WRITING AND LAW AS WEAPONS OF LIBERATION IN MAGDA PORTAL’S “PRISON POEMS”

This article will develop a legal-literary reading of the so-called “prison poems” by the poet Magda Portal (1900-1989), composed during her years of confinement in Chiclayo and Lima, from 1934 to 1936 during her strong APRA militancy. After reviewing some considerations on prison poetry and its political modality, a small corpus will be adjusted within the poetic work of the Peruvian writer and intellectual, leaving seven poems under this category. Finally, a brief analysis of each of them will be carried out to trace how the material contents of certain rights are mentioned in the poetic discourse from a critical sense and acting as weapons of political liberation.
