THE ACCUSATION AGAINST CÉSAR VALLEJO: RHETORICAL ELEMENTS, CRIMINALITY AND CAPITALISM

César Vallejo was incarcerated for 112 days in Trujillo prison. He was accused of having participated in the robbery and burning of Carlos Santa María's shop. The literary critics who have dealt with these events have paid attention to the impact of this prison experience on the author's poetry and narrative, but they have not examined or interpreted the complaint recorded by the alleged victim. This is why in this article I analyze in detail the structural components of that document, which allows us to see that the defendants were presented as people easily inclined to violence and theft. Such a configuration produces a plausible effect on the complaint, so that it is logical to believe that they were responsible for the crimes.
