Abstract

Pilates Contrology (coordination of body, mind and spirit) as a theory and field of knowledge appears at the beginning of the 20th century. This emergence is base on the autorized ways of educating the body, coming from the distinguished sectors of the USA. Its method includes connections between body practice-health-science- aesthetics of the time. This article collects primary and secondary resources, analyzing this theory en relation  to the French, Germany and Swedish gymnastics schools, whose common support is the natural body returning, the primacy of the hygienist discourse and the link between art and science. The hypothesis of this paper is that contrology proposes a regression to the natural as a way of life that prioritizes body care, based on body techniques that require supported and organized routines. Thus, it is type of gymnastics that, under the discourse of searching for the natural essence of the human being, present a techniques base don anatomical discourses. Its continuance and diffusion for almost a centuryshows that this theory contains fundations and practices that respond to ways of using  the body that are legitimized in certain social sectors. Also, the article shows,in an analytical way, the logic of the exercises and the organization of its practice in relation to the legitimized methods of using the body of the middle clases in Argentina.
