Abstract

This article analyzes the transmission paradigm (Shannon–Weaver) and its limitations for understanding and managing organizational conflicts that originate from or are amplified by communication problems—distinct from conflicts of interest—and proposes an alternative framework based on conversational competencies. The discussion is triggered by a central question: why do operational inefficiencies and the deterioration of workplace relationships associated with misunderstandings persist, even with training in public speaking and the availability of information technologies? The hypothesis argues that many management practices assume a passive notion of listening and treat communication-origin conflict as a “technical failure,” when it is often better explained by the constructive nature of listening and by the lack of explicit protocols for conversations aimed at coordinating actions, especially regarding what is left unsaid (Left-Hand Column). The article adopts a qualitative and reflective approach, based on a critical literature review and comparative conceptual analysis. It is positioned as a heuristic, theory-driven paper: it does not present original empirical evidence nor claim causal effects. Its contribution is to offer an analytical distinction and a trainable operational model to shift from improving the message to designing conversations, framing practical implications as plausible hypotheses.
