The Owenian homologies and the empirical basis of the theory of common descent

Que Charles Darwin reutilizara en sus teorizaciones conocimiento ya disponible sin problematizarlo no lesiona el carácter disruptivo de sus ideas. En tales casos, la novedad revolucionaria reside no tanto en la originalidad de las piezas del rompecabezas paradigmático, sino en el modo en el que las empleó para conformar un paisaje distinto. Aquí evaluamos un caso que cae bajo ese marco. Elucidamos los procedimientos propuestos por Richard Owen para la determinación de homologías especiales y seriales. Además, mostramos la relevancia explicativa de la introducción del concepto de homologías generales. Finalmente, exploramos las consecuencias filosóficas que se siguen del hecho que la teoría arquetípica y la teoría del origen en común comparten parcialmente su base empírica. La precedencia histórica de los procedimientos de determinación de los explananda de la teoría darwiniana, conjuntamente con su coincidencia parcial con los explananda de la teoría oweniana, tiene consecuencias metateóricas interesantes, algunas de las cuales son relevantes para discusiones que tienen lugar actualmente.
